The Ritchey Project
This site is in not affiliated with Tom Ritchey or Ritchey Design Inc.
The Ritchey Project started in March 2003 as an attempt to capture and record
better information on early mountain bikes produced by Tom Ritchey. Estimating the age of early
bikes can be difficult due to the lack of documentation available. One of the goals
of this project is to help other more easily identify their bikes.
Beginning as early as 1978, Tom Ritchey began building off-road bikes. As one of
the first builders and early pioneer of mountain bikes, the bikes Tom built provide some of the
best ties to the early history of the sport of Mountain biking.
Project Goals:
- Collect and publish information on early mountain bikes.
- Provide a better time line of production dates based on serial numbers and frame changes.
- Provide information and links to information published on the web.
In order for this site to grow, we need information from you! If you own an
older Ritchey, Ritchey Catalogs, bike reviews, etc., please contact me with the information that
you have. Bikes can be submitted via the "Submit a Bike" link at the top of the page. All other
info can be sent to me at bikes@oldmountainbikes.com.
Although I am interested in concentrating on the older bikes (pre-1990), I am not adverse to
collecting information on newer bikes. Although newer information and links can be found on this
site, the resource specifically targets the older bikes.
